01 — The stay

Putih means white. Carik is the rice field. The name is the whole idea — plain white walls, teak frames, and a terrace that opens onto the sawah. We kept everything else out of the way.

Six rooms is a deliberate number. It means the pool is usually empty when you want it, breakfast arrives at your terrace rather than a buffet line, and the staff learn your name on the first morning.

The property sits on Jalan Kajeng in Subak Juwuk Manis — close enough to walk into the centre of Ubud, far enough that what you hear at night is water moving through the irrigation channels.

The walk in

A single lit path runs between the rooms and the water. Ten steps from the gate the motorbikes are gone and what's left is the field, the frogs, and the light on the white walls.

Mornings

Breakfast comes to the terrace. Coffee, eggs, fruit — and the whole green plain doing that thing it does at seven in the morning when the mist is still sitting on it. The rice field walk starts 350 metres from the door.

Evenings

The pool holds the last of the heat. Warung Sweet Orange is a two-minute walk for dinner, or a massage can be arranged in the room — back, head, foot, full body. Then it goes very quiet.
